Prague - The right-wing Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and the Social Democratic Party both gained 20 percent of votes in the Czech legislative elections.

This is the result of an exit poll conducted by the SC&C agency for the public service Czech Television and aired immediately after the polling stations closed at 2 PM (12 GMT).

In addition to the Civic Democrats and the Social Democratic Party, four other parties would surpass the 5 percent threshold: the conservative TOP 09 with 17 percent of votes, the Communists with 11 percent, the centrist Public Affairs with 11 percent and the Christian Democrats with 5 percent.

SC&C surveyed 23,500 voters and the margin of error is estimated at 2 percent. This means, for example, that the presence of the Christian Democrats in the Lower Chamber is far from secured.

There are going to be two new faces in the Lower Chamber: TOP 09 and Public Affairs.

As was widely expected, the result resembles the deadlock produced in the last legislative election in 2006.

According to the exit poll, ODS and TOP 09 would have 92 seats in the 200-seat Lower Chamber of the Czech Parliament, and could form a coalition with the Public Affairs which would control approximately 24 seats, or with the Christian Democratic Party.

Aktuálně.cz's reporters are already preparing a more accurate projection of the election result that will take into account the exit polls as well as results coming from the polling stations.

The total voter turnout is estimated at 62 percent out of approximately eight millions of eligible voters.
